Kongbo, 9
Kongbo, 9, is the youngest of four and a first-grader in Henan Province. Both of his parents were infected with HIV while selling blood, and Kongbo's father died of AIDS a few years ago. His mother, while alive and on HIV medication, has had a rather serious adverse reaction to the medicine. The family owns three Mu (0.5 acre) of farmland and one sheep. They exist on a total annual income of about 800-900 Yuan (equivalent to $100 US). Kongbo's oldest sister and brother have moved away to make their own living. His older sister, 18, stays home and cares for her mother and young brother. Kongbo has a kidney problem and has always suffered from incontinence, but has never seen a doctor for his medical condition.
