Programs
Golden Courage International operates programs that help Chinese children and youth who live in extreme poverty and/or are affected or orphaned by AIDS. We help them with their urgent needs. And we guide the children and, in many cases, their remaining families, out of dark, harmful situations into bright, positive futures. Our strategy is to collaborate with the local government, the Chinese central government, local agencies, and international financial and educational resources to develop programs that will enrich the lives of these children, their families, and ultimately their communities.
Current Programs
One-on-One Help
In many poverty-ridden and AIDS-affected areas of China, children are forced to quit school to become caregivers and bread-winners for their families. One-on-One Help allows primary and middle-school-age children to continue their education and supports the health and job training needs of their families so they can become self-sufficient. The program delivers services on three levels: individual, family, and community. Read More
Great Expectations
Because China only offers nine years of public school education to all children, youth living in extreme poverty, regardless of their potential or past school performance, cannot afford to continue their education. These young people are typically forced into a life of hard labor. Great Expectations helps high-school-age youth living in extreme poverty who have shown academic promise obtain a high school education. Read More
Future Programs
Children's Hotline & Rescue Service
In China, the phenomenon of leaving rural areas to find employment in congested urban centers has resulted in a huge concentration of poor, transient workers known as China's "floating population". This population is well-known for its links to poverty, crime, drug use, prostitution, and the spread of HIV/AIDS.
The Children's Hotline & Rescue Service provides a 24-hour telephone hotline and transitional shelter services for young people in the floating population. Read More
International Summer Camps
As we work with impoverished kids, we recognize their need to live as normal a life as possible. This includes having fun, learning more about the world around them, learning new languages (especially English), interacting with children different from them, and working together to be of service to others.
In the near future, two-week summer camps for children between 6 and 15 years old will be organized to engage "GCI kids", who come from a life of extreme poverty, in intercultural enrichment experiences with children from other socio-economic backgrounds. Read More
