One-on-One Help Program in Rural China
In many poverty-ridden and AIDS-affected areas of China, children are forced to quit school to become caregivers and bread-winners for their families. One-on-One Help allows these children - ages 6 to 14 - to continue their education and helps their families access resources that enable them to become self-sufficient.
The program delivers services on three levels: individual, family and community. At the local level, One-on-One Help serves children by providing:
- School fees
- After-school tutoring
- Counseling
- School lunches
- Medical insurance
- Dental care
Families are helped through our efforts to arrange:
- Appropriate job training
- Enrollment in government disability, social relief and other international relief programs
- Appropriate medical care
The One-on-One Help Program began five years ago in rural Henan province and has recently expanded to areas closer to Beijing. To date, GCI's One-on-One Help has supported over 2,000 children and their families, and this number continues to grow. More than 300 families have become self-sufficient. Recently, we secured commitments from the Chinese government to provide 2-to-1 matching funds for this program, which will allow us to support a larger number of children.
Golden Courage International has trained 78 teachers to carry out the highly successful GCI model. As of late fall of 2009, 300 community leaders and additional teachers have been trained by original 78 trainees, building the capacity of the school districts, the teachers, and the entire community. A significant sign of the success of the program is the adoption by the Chinese government of the GCI model to implement in Beijing. Golden Courage has helped to create new social policy through the positive results of its One-on-One Program
